Kettering Archives

Kettering University is a private non-profit STEM university located in Flint, Michigan. It has an extensive automotive archive and library that includes over 100,000 documents, photographs, and other artifacts. The SAH’s own archive of publications and organizational records has been incorporated into this collection.

Sharing a commitment to the preservation and dissemination of automotive history for present and future generations, Kettering and the SAH have established a partnership to benefit students and scholars engaged in automotive history research.

As part of the SAH- Kettering relationship, the society offers the resources of over 650 SAH members to university faculty, staff, and students. This includes guest lecturers on various aspects of automotive history, assistance in the development of automotive history courses, funding for student research, and a travel award.

The Travel Award

The SAH has established an annual travel award – The Society of Automotive Historians Travel-to-Collections Grant – to help fund travel by students or scholars to use the Kettering University Archives for a specific scholarly work such as an article, book, chapter, lecture, film, paper, thesis, or dissertation.

The award is $1,500 for a minimum of one-week research residency in Flint, Michigan. The grant is reimbursement-based and covers travel, hotel, and dining expenses. At the end of the residency, the researcher will present their thesis and research findings to a gathering of SAH members and Kettering University faculty, students, and staff.

Applications will be accepted from March 1 to October 1, 2024 for research to be completed in 2025. Successful candidates will be notified of the Committee’s decision in January 2025. Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered. Applications must include a description of the intended research and its goals, a travel budget and a timeline, two letters of support and the researcher’s curriculum vitae. Send questions and applications to Dina Mein, PhD, at dmein@kettering.edu.
