The book author/self publisher who shared this heartwarming and wonderful news with me was a several year participant in our Book Selling and Signing at Fall Hershey. He’s not an SAH member but is one with whom I’ve shared a multiple decade personal friendship. You do need to know, too, that at those book signings in which he participated, he became acquainted with our own Kit Foster.

Whenever someone purchases a book from Dean Tryon’s www.FundamentalCarburetion.com website, he inquires of purchaser how that person learned of his book. Dean recently sold a book to a man with surname Bookman. The reply to his “where did you learn of the book” was special on two levels—one personal between Bookman and Tryon and the other an affirmation of Kit and his on-going, every issue column in Old Cars bi-monthly magazine (circ nearly 35,000). (hvh)

Mr. Tryon,

I was reading my February “Old Cars” publication last night and noticed that Kit Foster had relied on a source to respond to a carburetor question. He was an expert whose name I immediately recognized. My Dad, Lewis, worked with you for many years at RPD [Rochester Products Division of GM] and spoke often about the respect that he held for you.

You and several of the other GMI graduates are the reason he constantly harped on me to get my college education! I also had the privilege to work on Ernie Stettner’s farm during my Jr High and High School years. I am trying to remember if you were ever at our house during a “test drive” or for a card game. I would like to think that I might have met you in my youth.

Mom and Dad moved to Hendersonville, N.C. about ’97 and then to Highpoint 10 years later. Mom still lives in High Point. Dad passed a month before his 99th birthday, a few years ago. He was still active, driving and working on projects and still diagnosing engine problems for me from 2,400 miles away on the phone! Had he known you were so close, he would have visited immediately to talk shop. Definitely a missed opportunity for Dad.

I’m looking forward to reading your book! It will be like having Dad at my elbow – especially when I set the float level on my next re-build!! Glad I found your book!

Best wishes and good health.

Tom Bookman
