There’s another new book. This one is written by former SAH (#5169) member Preston Lerner. SAH president 2019 through 2021, Don Capps (#3122), had been one from whom Lerner, his longtime friend, had sought input sharing an early draft of his manuscript with Don for comment.
After Lerner’s book titled The Deadliest Decade published (by Octane Press), Don had observed, “While I might be able to almost hold my own with Preston on the research and analysis – there is simply no way on earth that I could ever match his writing. It is almost as if this is The Book that Preston was destined to write. It’s an excellent piece of thought and analysis following some very solid research as he documents. And, most importantly, it is not only well-written, but actually entertaining!” (hvh)
We had also noted in an earlier issue of this newsletter a forthcoming book from longtime SAHer (#1599) Leslie Kendall. Well, now with your correspondent having had an early looksee, I can tell you it is an impressive work!
With his Defying Detroit, Automobile Manufacturing in Southern California, Kendall joins an elite group of SAH researcher/authors who have produced invaluable research tools a/k/a encyclopedias. Think Nick Georgano (SAH #32) and his Encyclopedia of Motorcars 1895 to Present; Chet Krause (SAH #617) publishing Bev Kimes (SAH #808) and Austin Clark’s (SAH #37) Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942 and Gunner’s (John Gunnell, SAH #276) Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975; as well as McFarland’s Steve Wilson (SAH #2441) shepherding over a half dozen of J “Kelly” Flory, Jr’s (SAH #2321) different Every Model, Year by Year encyclopedias through the edit and revision processes to publication.
